I have a golf 7, I want to enable the appconnect feature, I talked to a guy in my dealership and he said I have to buy a whole new unit that has this feature pre-installed, I don't trust what he is saying, theoretically speaking it is the same hardware, and to me it just looks like a software update, I have to usb port to connect the unit to phone, and the composition media has the touch. Plug in the MDI to Update the Firmware. By plugging in the USB cable to the PC, the MDI Manager should recognize the MDI over USB by default. The MDI must be connected over USB in order to update the firmware on the MDI. The icon will indicate the method of connection and will be displayed over top of the MDI icon in the MDI Manager. Tried updating the latest version from VW site, I think it is kw22/2012, but the device said update not possible. Next I would like to try this one which is a step older: Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrade 0240 KW22-2011. However when I asked my dealer to help and update the Firmware, he said no updates are available with him. So I am looking for some download link from where I can download the update and process the same myself through SD Card.

iPhone 6 integration golf mk7
Thursday 29th January 2015
with the golf Mk7 I got 2 cables for Apple mmi integration. Up until recently I had an iPod plugged in using the old style wide cable, and i just left it in there all the time. Now I use my iPhone 6 with the Lightning cable and unplug it each time I leave the car. I now have a load of issues I don't have, some design, some reliability.
Every time I get in the car, connect the phone, the fking car tells the phone to play the alphabetically first song on the phone. Every time. Drives me utterly nuts. I realise this is likely to be a feature. Why the fk it is I don't know, no one would want that.
Even aside from that it's unreliable. Sometimes I tell it to change song and it doesn't, or maybe it plays a song I didn't pick, or it stops altogether. Sometimes on the screen it loses where we are up to with a track or a podcast. All just seems very flaky.
Any ideas?!

I use an iPhone 4S on mine, have got the poverty spec nav. I have to admit, it is pretty rubbish. Lately just getting errors saying no playlist and does not recognise the iPhone etc. Then works fine again.
If you can find out how to stop it from playing tracks alphabetically, please share. Have you tried just using Bluetooth, rather than connecting it up to see if more reliable?

I'd agree it isn't great - I don't use itunes but spotify, if you connect via bluetooth it's OK, if you connect via the cable it won't play it, so I've had to buy a separate car charger. Appreciate it's very much a first world problem but it's poor.

Hence why Apple came up with this - https://www.apple.com/uk/ios/carplay/ but car makers are slow to adopt it.

Its a fairly old technology they are using for this hence usability and support isn't great.
I find in my Golf Mk6 after doing an MDI firmware update it supports my iPhone 6 fairly well over MDI. Can navigate around and select playlists/ tracks easily enough. As a bonus it also supports Spotify with the caveat you need to initially start playback on the iPhone, then you can control through the head unit/ steering wheel after.
I also drive a 2014 Audi A1 which seems to work very nicely just via Bluetooth (no AMI). It will pick up the last song I was playing on my iPhone and start playback displaying full track info and album art. Control via MMI and MFSW. The Golf Bluetooth is Ok for calls/ phonebook but for music all I get is 'BT AUDIO' on the display and no control at all.
So I'm surprised to hear the Golf Mk7 is worse than my two given its a newer car!

When I first plugged my 6 in to our S5 I got similar issues - it seems to default to shuffle play, first track playing not where you left off etc. Most of it seems to go away if you change/check those settings on the phone while it's plugged in the car. The first track playing thing is a glitch in the Apple music player that should've been fixed years ago. I've reset mine a few times to defaults and it does fix it, but then you have to redo about 10 pages of settings!

I've not had 1 issue with the combination you've said.
I don't tend to plug it in, but when I do it works fine. Have you tried it over BT? see if you get the same?

i have an iPhone 5s and use it with the standard poverty spec head unit in my 7R - bluetooth only and it is absolutely faultless.
If i use spotify through BT i can change tracks with the steering wheel etc - auto connect and auto play when i get back in the car.
I've used the lead a few times just to charge, which still works fine. Just get a 64gb SD card, load it up, remove all the hidden folders, put in the slot in the glovebox and forget about it - this is my chosen method for media in the car for the last 4000 miles and it hasn't skipped a beat. Literally.

Does the album art show on the RNS510 screen, or just the track name and artist?

Sorry should have been clearer that I'm referring to my Mk6 Golf, which can't do album art full stop. You get track details via SD and MDI, but nothing at all via Bluetooth! The Audi does album art via all connectivity methods

You bugger! Mine was playing up on the way home! Cutting out and going quite. Cabled it in and it way fine.
I also get album art no probs.

How To Update Gm Mdi
If i use spotify through BT i can change tracks with the steering wheel etc - auto connect and auto play when i get back in the car.
Excellent someone else using spotify on a MK7. Do you find you can only use it on blue tooth (BT audio?). If I use the cable it won't play it, assuming I want to use iTunes, even though mine is empty - is this the same for you? It also doesn't always auto play, I have to manually boot spoify on the phone & then it won't always play it. I also can't control the albums on the head unit, merely skip track either on the head unit or steering wheel buttons. I assume its the same for all of us?Firmware Update Android

Just to add, I believe that on older iPhones, using a different cable (I believe it is the one with a red collar) allows album artwork. I think it is the same for Audi MMI, where the red one allows video play back also.

i am slightly afraid that the auto-playing of the same track every fking time i get in the car is shortly going to make me do something bad. Very bad. I feel like i am losing my mind.
It plays about a second of the track before it will allow me to pause it too, even if i am quick.
I'm actually contemplating buying a separate iPod again.
So, so st.
